The Remains

2021

This body of work came from my awareness of the deviation between memory and reality. By chance, I realized that my memory had fooled me. If memory is not accurate, what is the reality of the past? Is it more real if we look at the past from different perspectives? To validate, I chose several cities I have lived in, constructed the images of the impressive space that evoked my emotional resonance the most. Then I invited my family and friends to share their memories of these places and depicted their very different versions of memories on the other side of the paper. All works are executed with acrylic on 48 x 30 inches size Yupo paper. Because of the translucent nature of Yupo paper, images on both sides interact with each other, just like the entanglement of our memories, creating a more complete experience and a collective reality of the place. I believe this is how the world works. It also addresses new questions: the memory of others still involves me, the artist's interpretation, is it indeed impossible to know the reality of the past for us?
